What's the difference between wiped film evaporator and distillation unit?

Both use a wiped film mechanism where a wiper spreads the liquid into a thin film across the heated surface.

However, molecular distillation units usually feature a shorter path between the evaporating surface and the condenser to ensure that the separated molecules are quickly condensed and removed from the system to prevent contamination.

Wiped Film Evaporator

Operates at moderate to high temperatures and can handle a wide range of viscosities. It is used when relatively high throughput and simple solvent recovery are needed.

Wiped Film Distillation Unit

Operates under high vacuum and lower temperatures to minimize thermal degradation. It uses a very thin film of material on the evaporating surface, allowing for efficient molecular separation. The high vacuum reduces the boiling point of the substances, making it suitable for high-purity distillation.

Wiped Film Evaporator

Less precise in separation compared to molecular distillation. It is more suitable for bulk solvent removal or concentrating products rather than achieving extreme purity.
